New flavors of Wi-Fi accelerate the future of wireless technology

Networking professionals now require to include coverage, management, and security of Wi-Fi into their assessments, along with private, public and hybrid networks. Multiple Wi-Fi networks increase enterprise network complexity and the need for planning, Figueroa explained.

With industry momentum mounting around a comprehensive Wi-Fi solution, Wi-Fi Alliance launched the Wi-Fi HaLow, which operates in frequency bands below one gigahertz, offering longer range, lower power connectivity to Wi-Fi CERTIFIED products. Wi-Fi HaLow claims to enable a variety of new power-efficient use cases.

This is aimed to enhance Wi-Fi’s portfolio of core connectivity solutions and extend its reach further into the smart home, connected car, smart city, and industrial environments. Wi-Fi Alliance has certified more than 25,000 products and has numerous Wi-Fi enhancements underway that will further proliferate Wi-Fi CERTIFIED technologies around the world.

Wi-Fi advancements to both core technologies as well as technology capabilities will help in delivering a better user experience in managed networks or environments with a high density of active devices.

“Wi-Fi HaLow is well suited to meet the unique needs of the smart home, smart city, and industrial markets because of its ability to operate using very low power, penetrate through walls, and operate at significantly longer ranges,” said Figueroa. “It expands the unmatched versatility of Wi-Fi to enable applications from small, battery-operated wearable devices to large-scale industrial facility deployments–and everything in between.”

Wireless experience has improved steadily over time, but is in desperate need of constant improvements and updates in order to keep up with expectations. Wi-Fi Alliance's success with global interoperability and enabling programs such as Passpoint will bring convergence to the increasingly chaotic wireless landscape.

“Passpoint program focuses on cellular carrier offload and global roaming across public hotspots. But it's conceivable that the same underlying concepts could be applied to new flavors of Wi-Fi to connect to corporate WLANs and carrier networks,” said Figueroa.

Wi-Fi technology continues to advance at a rapid speed, making what was once amazing seem common today, and the future is expected to have the potential for even faster speeds and increased stability. Service providers and organizations like Wi-Fi Alliance claim to be confident in providing seamless wireless coverage to anyone and everyone in the present and wherever the future takes us.
